Why we like him:
With most rappers today being noticed more for their “catchy” phrases, southern beats or the way they came up in the industry, it’s refreshing to have a relatively new talent with actual skill! We use the word “new” lightly since J. Cole first began making a buzz for himself around 2007 with his first mixtape, “The Come Up.” Since then, Cole has dropped 3 other mixtapes, one studio album, has been on countless features and was signed to Roc Nation.
Cole is a German born, North Carolina raised, St. John’s college grad dude…and he’s bringing back rap that actually says something without pretending to be something he’s not. His tracks tell stories, make us dance in the club, and give us a peek into his thoughts and life.
This year we hear he’s working on his sophomore album as well as some new music with Kendrick Lamar. We look forward to hearing more from you, J. Cole. Salute!
